Surfer Blood Played WFNX Sponsored Concert
November 14th, 2011 (review by Emily)

It was a shadowy beach party at Landsdowne Pub last night as Surfer Blood played, courtesy of radio station WFNX. The free show brought in an assortment of hipsters and radio listeners; this was not my typical Monday night music scene. Budweiser girls were passing out T-shirts and people were taking shots of SOCO with lime. Our common interest, you ask? We wanted our free music.
“Can we dim the house lights? This song is deep.” John Paul Pitts, Surfer Blood’s vocalist/guitarists, is your typical obnoxious young rock star. He is constantly blowing up his twitter feed with random notions about music and his life on tour. I don’t blame the guy though; Surfer Blood was named Best New Music by Pitchfork for their debut album “Astro Coast”. The band’s fame is well deserved. Their music is completely chill but the complexity is there and begging to be noticed. The intensity of Take It Easy was probably felt by the kids dancing at House of Blues next door. Various forms of hand/finger pointing swept through the Pub while Pitts shrieked “…or we will both be sorry”. I hadn’t seen audiences as devoted to the lyrics of a song as these WFNX listeners were since Emo happened.

As each song from their newest release “Tarot Classics” was played, Pitts would announce that the song was new, (but– you honestly wouldn’t have been able to tell) the crowd sang along to every word. “Tarot Classics” is the most recent EP released and it seems to be just more of the same from Surfer Blood. I doubt the band needs ‘improvement’ but it would be nice to hear some variety in the future. I’d say the highlight of the show was the jam sessions during the songs. These guys are obviously talented, and they weren’t afraid to show off a little. Surfer Blood wanted to give the people what they want and apparently the people wanted the band to play their instruments with their teeth and drum sticks. The crowd relinquished their tired bodies to the sounds of Swim while the show came to an end with a dance party. I’d like to thank WFNX for the free tickets and for supporting great bands like Surfer Blood.
‘Boston everyone left the show {but} we want to hang out’ – @surferbloods twitter post I read in the car on the way home. Rock stars, am I right? Some of us have work on Tuesday mornings.
